Buying a mattress can make anyone toss and turn - and if you choose the wrong one, it can cost a small fortune - and it can cost you your precious sleep and your health.
Comparing prices isn’t like shopping around for most other big-ticket items, like cars or dishwashers. Model names differ from one store to the next, even if the beds seem nearly identical.
You might find one compelling bed at one store, but when you go elsewhere to see if you can get a better price, you won’t find the same model under the same name because it is being marketed differently.
It’s a potential nightmare for anyone who insists on doing apples-to apples comparisons.
Consumer Reports said retailers want exclusive products from manufacturers that cannot be found at competitors stores – to give the sellers more leverage. While product research and recommendations from sources you trust are still key, in this model "consumers are the ones who lose out," said Steven Saltzman , a deputy editor at Consumerreports.org.
